outline biography ...

david has been directing actors in theatre, television and film, and singers in opera, for over thirty years ...

in theatre, he was a resident staff director at the bristol old vic and the royal national theatre in london where he worked as the assistant to harold pinter, david hare and tom stoppard ... he has directed both contemporary and classic plays at home and abroad ...

in opera, he was a staff director at glyndebourne festival opera and, in 1979, he won the ‘young opera director of the year’ award before directing various 20th century operas at uk festivals in the eighties ...

in television, he has directed drama on all the major uk terrestrial channels, bbc1, bbc2, itv, channel 4 and five; and also on sky1 ... well known productions included ‘howard’s way’, ‘coronation street’, ‘the bill’, ‘brookside’, ‘casualty’ and ‘dream team’, the last of which he also produced for a time ...

as a writer, while continuing to give .thecloseup. both in the uk and across europe, david has delivered two original screenplays, one of which is currently being considered for major production ... also, with an important contemporary composer, he has a radically original ‘lyric film’ project currently in development, the music/dialogue relationship of which is anticipated by david’s short film, ‘conversation’ (duration 6'40") ... he regularly responds to calls for script doctoring work

in 2010 david directed the austrian premiere of polly stenham’s ‘that face’ at the vorarlberger landestheater in bregenz, and in october 2011 he directed von hofmannsthal’s ‘amor und psyche’ for the neubeuerwoche in germany. in november 2013 in vienna, david directed ‘ein winter weg’, his own completely original interpretation and staging of the wilhelm mueller sequence of poems that inspired schubert’s ‘winterreise’; here, in this instance though, without any music accompaniment at all, let alone schubert’s.

in september 2014, he directed donizetti’s ‘lucia di lammermoor’ for winslow hall opera, in england.

most of david’s time, though, is spent hosting .thecloseup. masterclasses across europe.
